Palmento di Rudinì a Marzamemi
It is in front of the Marzamemi Port, Palmento it’s called the place where grapevine is pressed. Then the “mosto” will be “wine”
Huge dimension for this Palmento because a huge quantity of grape was cultivated in the area of Pachino, Rosolini, Noto, Portopalo. Now a lot of Farms in the area produce wine but in the past, not so many “press” and all fruits were concentrated and pressed at the same place. In this Palmento.
A big pipe connected the Palmento directly to the port where the ship was ready to bring in Nord Italy and in France. This kind of wine, especially the Nero d’Avola was used to cut others kind of wine. Too strong to be understood at that times.
The creator was the Marchese di Rudinì, owner of all the land in the area.
After the second world war, the Palmento has not used anymore but it was restored some years ago to become an example of the Archeologiacal industry. Now it used for Food events and Art events.
